Myself/Myself/Myself
Composer-librettist Heinz-Juhani Hofmann’s work ”Myself/Myself/Myself” is a one-act multi-genre musical theatre performance for a singer, actress, and electronics. The story follows the inner struggles of a young woman named Afrodite AKA Didi in her obsessive pursuits. Didi pushes herself against the world, mirroring herself against her mother and the beggar woman sitting on the street. This world is not clear-cut; beauty and ugliness become a slippery mix. From Didi’s unstoppable stream of consciousness stems a dialogue where self-discipline, ideals of beauty, the quest for perfection, and cross-generational questions drag her into an increasingly swirling abyss. The public eye becomes an altar where a person’s core is carried and offered.
Heinz-Juhani Hofmann is known for his virtuoso, dark, and powerful works dealing with the underside of the human psyche. His work ”Aukio” (”The Clearing”) was nominated for the 2023 Teosto Prize as the best new Finnish composition. Soprano Annika Fuhrmann, known as a bold and versatile performer, has worked with him earlier, for example in the acclaimed ”Maailmantappaja” (”World Killer”). Actress Pauliina Palo has recently appeared in the striking Espoo City Theatre production of ”Anatomy of a Suicide” which combines theatre with modern circus. Director Johanna Freundlich’s works include Taite Ry and Musica Nova’s production ”Denis & Katya” at the Finnish National Opera, ”My Cat Yugoslavia” at the Finnish National Theatre, and ”Crime and Punishment” in Russia. Visualist Ninja Pasanen has worked at the Ryhmäteatteri (”Group Theatre”) in Helsinki and in various TV-productions.
