Ada Lovelace
The monologue opera “Ada Lovelace” tells the story of how the title character, a woman ahead of her time, developed the world's first algorithm for a mechanical machine. She was a mathematical innovator who predicted the rise of information technology a hundred years before computers.
In the opera, Ada Lovelace's story is told through powerful music. The grand piano on stage is the play's mechanical computer, which Ada admires and studies. Ada sings duets with herself on video, and occasionally devotes herself to playing the harp. This opera was inspired by Lovelace's own idea of poetic science, that is, the idea that art can serve as inspiration for doing science.
The libretto for the opera is written by Isabella Shaw, who also plays the role of Ada in the opera. In addition to opera singing, Shaw has studied literature at the University of Cambridge. The music was composed by Uljas Pulkkis, who has combined in this work 20th-century avant-garde, early computer-era machine music, and 19th-century romanticism into a uniquely personal musical language.
